Description

Product Description

In this combined edition, the full content of volumes 1 and 2 of Thomas Kidd’s American History are brought together in a single, accessible textbook. This sweeping narrative spans the full scope of American history from the first Native American societies to the political and cultural struggles of contemporary times. In clear, readable prose, and with attention to well-known and more obscure figures from American history, Kidd gives a robust account of the events, people, and ideas that gave shape to our nation.

Students will come away from American History well-informed, and better prepared to wrestle with the political and cultural changes that have dramatically transformed contemporary American life.

Praise for American History
“Thomas Kidd has succeeded well in providing a high quality American history text that integrates the usual political and social history with its religious dimensions.”
—George Marsden, professor of history emeritus, University of Notre Dame

“Thomas Kidd explores the entirety of American history in this carefully researched and clearly written text. It is an ideal book for students new to American history as well as for older readers who would like a sprightly, objective, and discerning refresher.”
—Mark Noll, professor of history emeritus, University of Notre Dame, and research professor of history, Regent College

I bought this history book because I thought it was the most unbiased history book available that includes the last 40 years of US history. (Based on recommendations and reviews.) I read it aloud to my high school students. I am about 1/3 done and will upgrade my review if the following issues improve: 1. the author *will not* let up noting at every forced opportunity that Indians and blacks were not consulted about political boundaries, fair working conditions, etc. Every time he states that an event happened, he adds a sentence about minorities not being consulted on their feelings about the event/action. WE KNOW about Indian mistreatment and WE KNOW about issues regarding slavery and WE KNOW about civil rights. It is really as though the author expects the book to be read by 6 year olds who cannot grasp the basics of US---and world---history because in their 6-year-old world, nobody is racist or hateful. All I want are the facts. 2. I am a Christian yet I feel that the author overdoes details about religious life in America to the detriment of other topics he does not detail. For example, we all remember the term "Monroe Doctrine" from 6th grade history, right? We may not remember exactly what the Monroe Doctrine was, though. Well, you''ll have to Google it if you want to know what it means after reading the two paragraphs "about" the Monroe Doctrine in this book because the author never explains it. At all. However, I now know the names of at least a dozen early American preachers and denominations. He even references Church of Christ which is a verrrry tiny denomination and one I am aware of only due to having been brought up in that denomination. I believe the author has ties to Pepperdine so that is likely how he knows about it as well. I very much like having a history text that *includes* religious life as part of the story, but this honestly is getting to be more like a Christian homeschool text than the meaty US history I was expecting.

This book does read like a text book, but a great one. Kidd chunks out important subjects through chapters and through sub chapters it a nice way that keep things moving and interesting. its a long one, and it took me about 2 months (reading 15 min to an hour a day) to read it cover to cover.

Some people wont like this book as it has a ton of unbiased religious discussion, but I''m not actively religious and I found it fascinating. This country truly was founded on some religious footing, and it''s necessary to accept that in order to truly understand American history.

Also, this book is unbiased in nature. Some will be upset that it isn''t rooted in American Exceptionalism, but it''s not like it makes you sad to be an American. Quite the opposite actually, as you learn about all the progress we''ve made as a country. It''s a time frame by time frame description of what actually happened, bad or good, and that is what Americans should strive to have knowledge of.

The author states in the Introduction, starting in the third paragraph, that "I have emphasized certain major themes in American history. Some of the focus emerges from my own interests and perspective. Readers should know that I am a Christian, and a Baptist in particular. I identify with the historic evangelical tradition and the faith of figures such as the Baptist champions revival and religious liberty in the eighteenth century. This commitment profoundly shapes my view of history. Therefore, I give a lot of attention to religion." At the bottom of the second page, the author continues with "Christians believe the Kingdom of God is our ultimate commitment, and we should confuse no temporal nation with that kingdom." I''m a Christian as well. However, I also know, recognize and respect other cultures religious views. Since I live in a country that is home to not only those who follow the Christian faith, but those who follow other faiths as well, I feel as though a book written about American history shouldn''t rely so heavily on the Christian faith. Especially since there were those who didn''t follow Christianity who helped build this nation. When I purchased this book, there was no statement in the description section that this book relied heavily on the Christian faith. The description section should make a note of this. This way, when other individuals look into possibly purchasing this book, they will have a better handle on what to expect.

A Discerning Perspective

America is changing every day. How did we get here? In American History, Thomas Kidd presents the sweeping narrative that spans the full scope of American history.

Events, People, and Ideas

Thomas S. Kidd is distinguished professor of history and associate director of the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University. He also serves as distinguished visiting profess of church history at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.I know him from his work at The Gospel Coalition, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.

This textbook is a combined edition of the full content of volumes 1 and 2 of Thomas Kidd’s American History. In just over 700 pages, Kidd covers 1492 to the present day, from early American encounters and England and its colonies through the Age of Terrorism. Along the way, The American Revolution and the Constitution, The Civil War, World War I, and World War II are discussed.

Christianity in America

While Kidd is sure to address our Presidents, important historical figures, and cultural events, I most appreciated what Kidd had to say regarding Christianity in America. For instance, Kidd clearly explains how theological threats in the early 1900s led conservative Christianity to embrace fundamentalism. And he highlights how this led to the founding of new institutes and seminaries, such as Chicago’s Moody Bible Institute, the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (Biola), and Dallas Theological Seminary.

This was my first book review for B&H Academic and I was not disappointed. This is a textbook worthy of serious study and consideration. The full-color pages and illustrations help history come alive. Selected bibliographies are featured at the end of every chapter, and a robust index is included at the back of the book. It will be a primary resource for classroom or home study.

A Discerning Perspective

After reading this book, I came away with a better understanding of how we arrived at our current state of the nation. I feel better equipped to tackle political issues and cultural worldviews. With the news and politics giving differing opinions on how our nation should operate, it is good to have this book as a tool to know the facts. And while I firmly believe that the future is in God’s hands, I am ready to wrestle from a discerning Christian perspective with the changes that will come.

I received a media review copy of American History but was not required to write a positive review.
