Description

Product Description

Stephen E. Ambrose’s iconic New York Times bestseller about the ordinary men who became the World War II’s most extraordinary soldiers: Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, US Army.

They came together, citizen soldiers, in the summer of 1942, drawn to Airborne by the $50 monthly bonus and a desire to be better than the other guy. And at its peak—in Holland and the Ardennes—Easy Company was as good a rifle company as any in the world.

From the rigorous training in Georgia in 1942 to the disbanding in 1945, Stephen E. Ambrose tells the story of this remarkable company. In combat, the reward for a job well done is the next tough assignment, and as they advanced through Europe, the men of Easy kept getting the tough assignments.

They parachuted into France early D-Day morning and knocked out a battery of four 105 mm cannon looking down Utah Beach; they parachuted into Holland during the Arnhem campaign; they were the Battered Bastards of the Bastion of Bastogne, brought in to hold the line, although surrounded, in the Battle of the Bulge; and then they spearheaded the counteroffensive. Finally, they captured Hitler''s Bavarian outpost, his Eagle''s Nest at Berchtesgaden.

They were rough-and-ready guys, battered by the Depression, mistrustful and suspicious. They drank too much French wine, looted too many German cameras and watches, and fought too often with other GIs. But in training and combat they learned selflessness and found the closest brotherhood they ever knew. They discovered that in war, men who loved life would give their lives for them.

This is the story of the men who fought, of the martinet they hated who trained them well, and of the captain they loved who led them. E Company was a company of men who went hungry, froze, and died for each other, a company that took 150 percent casualties, a company where the Purple Heart was not a medal—it was a badge of office.

Review

"Publishers Weekly" This is a terrific read for WW II action buffs.

"San Francisco Chronicle" A first-class explanation of what crack infantry troops are like...Addicts of military history will relish its finely detailed account....Stephen Ambrose''s thorough research and clear organization have produced a highly readable account of the heroic service of this "band of brothers" he so unstintedly admires.

"The New York Times Book Review" As a member of just such a unit...I am impressed by how well Mr. Ambrose has captured the true essence of a combat rifle company.

"The Times-Picayune" A valuable and fascinating record...In these pages, the reader can vicariously walk with the men of E Company, suffer and laugh with them.

Well immediately you can see that apparently a 3rd grader with a safety scissors was in charge of making sure the pages were all cut correctly. Not impressed at all with how the pages line up.

I bought the hardback to last years and enjoyed the book moreso than the HBO series (both are great!).

Recently, I got to see some of the remaining Easy Co vets on PBS (Memorial Day Documentary) interviewing some of the E. Co. PJ''s. It is so fascinating hearing about the brave individuals that fought these historic battles. Ambrose really got to know some of these soldiers well during the interviews for this book. What an honor that would be to speak with Vets of WWII. I lost a Great Uncle in the South Pacific and wish I could have met him.

A big salute to all men and women in all US branches!

I''ve read two military books prior to this 1776, and We where soldiers. If you''ve seen the TV series then reading this is a must! The series is great a 10 out of 10, the book is even better. I won''t get into detail but while the book has so much more detail it''s also chilling. You get to know these men and while reading some die and you know it''s not a character that has died but a real person, a young man gave his life for us. To myself there is no greater sacrifice a man or woman can give. They did this for people they didn''t know, but they did it because it was just, and right. I love this book. You will too.

The story is phenomenal, but the quality of the book itself is really bad. The pages of this book are completely uneven, binding very poor. I’ve seen others with the same feedback.

Was blessed to have had my Dad until 2002; he served in the Pacific during WWII. He and I were history buffs together. The mini-series, "Band of Brothers," is an astounding accomplishment by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Since it originally aired in 2002, I have watched it over a dozen times. Fortunately, my Dad got to see it too. The mini-series does justice to Stephen Ambrose''s wonderful book of the same name and it honors the extraordinary men of Easy Company.

Lo compré para regalo y la persona lo disfrutó mucho, las historias y las fotografías son sin duda maravillosas. El único detalle es el corte de las hojas que le da un aspecto pobre al libro. Ya había leído sobre el mismo problema en comentarios anteriores.

Better than the movie.

Although the movie was excellent, as always the book was much better. The additional details and characters and their descriptions and actions made it a difficult book to put down. If you enjoyed the movie or are interested in WWII history I recommend this book.
