Leave it to Morrissey to record an album of cover-songs that isn’t bland or reek of some middle age rock star that’s run out of ideas and cashes in on other people’s work as a novelty. Morrissey chose songs that stand on their own while simultaneously making a cohesive album statement. Even the lighter pop songs mesh well with the more folkish protest feeling on other tracks. There are several songs from the 60’s, and he does them justice. It reminds me that while Bob Dylan was important to that decade, so was Burt Bacharach. He’s also chosen songs by people that aren’t as well known but deserve a lot more recognition; Laura Nyro, Buffy Saint Marie, Melanie, and Jobriath for example. He’s consistently tried to bring attention to lesser known artists throughout his career, and he succeeds lovingly here. Hopefully people will hear the album and look deeper into these great songwriters and performers. Morrissey’s version of Joni Mitchell’s Don’t Interrupt The Sorrow retains the moody vibe present in the original without imitating, and I was pleasantly surprised to read the credits and find that Tom Scott who recorded and toured with Joni in the seventies plays saxophone on that track. Even though the album comprises songs that are decades old, many touch on themes current with what’s going on in the world today. It might be a stretch, but in a quiet way, I think Morrissey produced a current thematic statement with this one.

Many singer/songwriters of a certain age from the 20th Century have done albums of covers in the 21st Century, and I have to say that this is one of the very best of its kind! These are not the usual, same-old, same-old, oft-covered hits by most of these composers. Morrissey went for lesser known songs and deep album tracks, many of which happen to be favorites of mine -- and he gives them his own, personal touch -- so these aren''t slavish copies, but loving tributes done his way. It''s a stunning lineup of songs from start to finish. One of the only huge hits Morrissey covers here is Laura Nyro''s "Wedding Bell Blues," but he makes it his own (and doesn''t change the gender, so it''s perfect for the age of same-sex marriage)! Buffy Sainte-Marie''s "Suffer The Little Children," from her great Illuminations album, and Joni Mitchell''s "Don''t Interrupt the Sorrow," from The Hissing of Summer Lawns, are fascinating choices, and are done with both vocal intensity and instrumental finesse, creating moods that honor the originals, while bringing Morrissey''s own style into the picture.. Bob Dylan''s "Only A Pawn In Their Game" is similarly reverent and relevant to our present political moment, without feeling like a soap box. The subjects are varied, too; Morrissey covers a lesser known Dionne Warwick-Bacharach/David song, "Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets," and it''s a gem of elegant understatement. Covering other songwriters of the mid-20th Century -- Phil Ochs, Melanie, Tim Hardin, Carly Simon, Gary Puckett and Roy Orbison -- I''m impressed by the breadth of Morrissey''s musical knowledge, as well as his refined taste, in picking material that deserves to be revisited and highlighted. Major Radio hits get enough attention, so it''s good to remind people that some of the juiciest bits can be found by looking beyond the charts! Adding to the magic of this CD is Morrissey''s singing, some of the best vocals of his career!

Oh, sorry man I won''t be able to totally quit meat and turn vegan in this life, perhaps in the next one.

Where was I? Oh yes, this is a breezy, well-played, nicely-sung, expertly-produced lp...perfect for the summer time! Steven sounds at the top of his game. The song collection is a grab-bag of familiar ''60s favorites and obscure folky gems from the likes of Joni Mitchell, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Phil Ochs, Dylan...and JOBRIATH!

Featuring the usual terrible art direction (The Smiths and Morrissey''s art is the WORST in music...change my mind!), I would recommend everyone to buy this lp and show your support for a GREAT ARTIST. One of the last. Enjoy.

As an artist, Morrissey has been influenced by the 60s and 70s pop ballads and music. California Son may be his greatest tribute to the era of great vocalists such as Buffy Sainte-Marie (Suffer the Little Children) and Laura Nyro ( Wedding Bell Blues) and pop singers Jobriath , Carly Simon, Roy Orbison.
In this album, he triumphantly compiled the magical sounds that defined him as one of the greatest singers of his generation. I particularly liked the cover of " Rose Garden", originally sung by Lynn Anderson. Moreover, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day lent his vocals in their rendition of "Wedding Bell Blues". And come on, any album with a cover of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap has merit to be listen to.

The true sign that an artist has given up and needs money is two fold: 1. Too many greatest hits cds followed by 2. a cd of cover songs. MO tried to be his rebel self by creating an album of cover songs that really no one has ever heard before, giving it the mild semblance of an original cd. Its not awful by any means, but its forgettable. There are a couple of highlights - mostly Wedding Bell Blues, turning it into a nice gay anthem for the era. Don''t NOT buy it, just saying there may be something better to spend 12 bucks on.

Yes, Morrissey is a problematic artist but what saves him is that sometimes he comes up with the goods and this album of cover versions more than delivers. Each song is effortlessly transplanted to World Of Morrissey replete with the now, standard rock backing, cheesy synths and Morrissey’s distinctive yodelling. Someone should tell the milkshake-throwing lefties that freedom of speech and democracy is meant to extend to everyone.

The majority of reviews for this album have been crushingly negative with 3, 2 and even 1 star press gradings the norm. I can only deduce that the reasoning behind these judgements is influenced not by the music but by the singers none political correctness because this album at this stage in his career is something of a gem. Side 1 is the stronger but there are some beauties on side 2 also including song for Lenny Bruce which Nico made her own in the 60’s. Don’t get me wrong, like many long term followers, I cringe with mortification at his utterances these days but his music should be considered independent of his questionable views. The voice on Californian Son is stunning with shades of Walker and Sinatra embedded into the general gorgeousnesses of the production. If only his politics were as lovely!!!
