Product Description

Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards''s bestseller The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now, much as artists progress from drawing to painting, Edwards moves from black-and-white into color. This much-awaited new guide distills the enormous existing knowledge about color theory into a practical method of working with color to produce harmonious combinations.

Using techniques tested and honed in her five-day intensive color workshops, Edwards provides a basic understanding of how to see color, how to use it, and-for those involved in art, painting, or design-how to mix and combine hues. Including more than 125 color images and exercises that move from simple to challenging, this volume explains how to:

  • see what is really there rather than what you "know" in your mind about colored objects
  • perceive how light affects color, and how colors affect one another
  • manipulate hue, value, and intensity of color and transform colors into their opposites
  • balance color in still-life, landscape, figure, and portrait painting
  • understand the psychology of color
  • harmonize color in your surroundings

While we recognize and treasure the beautiful use of color, reproducing what we see can be a challenge. Accessibly unweaving color''s complexity, this must-have primer is destined to be an instant classic.

When I saw the book about COLOR by the renown author of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" I expected something new and perhaps radical concerning color in art. But the information in the book is the same old same old information and terms in hundreds of aging books in the library and on the racks at art supply stores. The book was a disappointment and I am now using it under the leg of my table that was wobbling. There was nothing new and interesting in the book.

This is a wonderful introduction about color and color theory for the beginner, but it doesn''t go beyond what is taught in art classes at the high school and beginning introductory classes at the college level. I was hoping for expert tips and something about how color palettes work in paintings. Of course, if you''re just getting started in art and not attending college or an art school, this is a worthwhile book.

Someone else mentioned in their review that this book is outdated. I have to agree. The examples presented are the same old "Picasso''s Blue Period" & Monet''s haystacks that were around over 30 yrs ago when I was in art school. There are so many more artists to reference! What really concerned me was a mention that some colors can be "dangerous" worn in some urban neighborhoods. A thoughtful editor needs to do some updates that are more socially aware and inclusive.
If you are beyond beginner, buy a color wheel and do the exercises in Albers "Interaction of Color. " (There''s also a free interactive iPhone app of Albers'' activities if you want to skip the book.)

I cannot say enough good about this book. Being new to color mixing and understanding color in the "painting" world, I needed solid, basic information; it is not only there but done intelligently and clearly. She is asking you to use acrylics in the exercises to simplify the process, but I have actually started with watercolors and am still getting what I need in the way of a good learning experience. Have learned how the brain changes what we are actually seeing, how colors influence each other when in proximity, and all the color wheel basics. I bought a used copy so I could mark it up! I will be using this info in my fiber work from now on!

A very good introduction to color theory. Relevant quotes and comments from color scientists and artists from the past makes this a very readable history of the what''s and why''s of using color in art. The bulk of the book deals with the how-to''s of color mixing with a very effective progression of hands-on exercises that moves the left brain theory down the right-brain rabbit hole resulting in a "wow, did I create that" experience. Highly recommended!

I first checked this book out of my local library and loved it so much I kept it for almost a year. I returned it the day after my Amazon copy arrived and the fine was worth every penny. I had struggled with my ability to produce watercolors that I liked. This book changed everything. Through a mixture (no pun intended) of theory and exercises, it helped me understand how to achieve perfect results. It is a constant reference. I have simply found no better book on understanding color.

The book itself is written extremely well. However, this is NOT up-to-date information on color theory, whatsoever. And there''s really no excuse for it! At the time it was originally published, Betty could have easily accessed widely discussed newer color theory and mixing strategies. Instead, she rehashed color theory (and a ton of quotes) from artists and scientists from the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was really disappointing, as Betty is well regarded as an expert in the area of art education. The only boon of this book, is in the beginning where she talks about constancy distortion (which barely relates to color theory, funny enough). However, from what I understand you can get that information from her Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain book (I have not yet read this book, in full disclosure). I would instead go with books by Jan Hart, Nita Engle, Jeanne Dobie, or check out the extensive free resources at Handprint.com that talks about the science of how we see color and light, and proper color mixing (even though the site is geared towards watercolor, the color theory section can be applied to any medium).
