Description

No one could have predicted Bruce''s next move as the 1980s ended: dissolving The E Street Band (retaining only pianist Roy Bittan) and assembling a group of ace studio musicians in Los Angeles, including bassist Randy Jackson and Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro, to record his next work. Human Touch was a more upbeat, modern pop/rock-inspired affair, Bruce''s self-proclaimed attempt at writing "happy songs." Initially planned for a 1991 release, Springsteen temporarily shelved Human Touch with the intention of adding more material; a sudden burst of creativity in fact produced a second album, the stripped-down, personal Lucky Town. Both were released simultaneously in the Spring of 1992.

After the darkness of Tunnel Of Love, Bruce switched to a much lighter sound, something like BITUSA but not as stadium like. I recall that when this album an Human Touch were released they got a lot of flak, probably because people were expecting more mature albums. I think that switching the feeling up after Tunnel Of Love was the right move to make - like Born In The USA after Nebraska. These two albums should be accepted as what they are, some some bright, poppy, foot tapping songs. After this we got Ghost of Tom Joad, another personal album so having Lucky Town and Human Touch released between Tunnel and Tom Joad made sense and maintained the musical balance. Personally I love these albums and enjoy them for what they are, love songs and fun songs.

Album is great. Vinyl came warped like all other vinyl from Amazon these days. Seriously the 4th record in a row. You’d think they’d figure out how to store and protect their products by now.

So this review is meaningful perhaps to people because unlike other reviews from Springsteen fans, this one is from a fan of Rock and Roll, not a collector of Springsteen. This was the first Springsteen recording I have purchased (finally gave in after years of avoiding the purchase). The reason is that it is a very consistent recording. All 10 songs are listenable, and 8 of 10 are very good - only 2 tracks I do not care for much, but they are still okay and I listen through them & do not skip. Lucky Town, Better Days, and Living Proof alone make this recording worth a purchase. Even the Born in the USA record was not as consistent of a release: it has about 7 of 12 songs being very good with another 2 okay and 3 that I do not like and would skip. I did give in and buy Born In The USA as well now, but prefer Lucky Town. Born in the USA has many of his hits and was his most commercial and successful release. The one person really missing from the E Street Band on the Lucky Town record is Max Weinberg on drums. Springsteen handles the musicianship extremely well on his own. I can only listen to select tracks of Springsteen''s other works whether earlier or more recent. Over his career he has put together an impressive collection of songs, but there is no Best Of or Essential or Greatest Hits Cd that puts it all together to do it justice. I do like Murder Inc. on one of those that I heard on the radio, but other people seem not to like that one. I do not find Lucky Town boring whatsoever even though many songs are mid-tempo or slower: it still rocks, but in a pensive way. Only other artists that really did that was Jon Bon Jovi on the Blaze of Glory kinda western-rock record. Listen to Santa Fe, Blood Money, Justice in the Barrel, or Blaze of Glory and Mark Knopfler throughout his career, and you should recognize that too perhaps. The difference being songs like Welcome To The Jungle, Rainbow In The Dark, Ace Of Spades or Enter Sandman for instance are rather overtly bad-ass with a fast tempo. It takes something to do it with a slower song. Perhaps the Springsteen fans that do not listen to this one should listen again with fresh ears. Maybe they will end up liking it now that over twenty years have passed. Reason I bought disc: felt it was essential and you only hear Springsteen on the radio these days occasionally, especially when he puts out a new record or comes to town on tour.
He does a pretty bad-ass live version of This Land Is Your Land as well (heard it on the radio long ago).
Rating by Song
1) Better Days = 10/10 2) Lucky Town (title track for a reason) = 10/10 3) Local Hero = 4/10 (weakest track) 4) If I Should Fall Behind = 9/10 5) Leap of Faith = 7/10 6) The Big Muddy = 5/10 (so - so track, but excellent instrumentation) 7) Living Proof = 10/10 8) Book Of Dreams = 8/10 9) Souls Of The Departed = 9/10 10) My Beautiful Reward = 10/10

Well, you can''t say that reading some of your fellow reviewers'' takes on this album aren''t interesting, especially the one who refers to ''dull sessions musicians''. Mmn, I''m not sure that Patty Scialfa, Soozie Tyrell and Roy Bittan - all well-known E Street Band members who participate in the album - would necessarily agree. OK, so the drummer ain''t the brilliant Max, but it''s the Boss himself who plays all the other instruments, and anyone who calls Bruce Springsteen a ''dull sessions muscian'' should probably think again. But, anyway, what about the album? OK, so it might not be Springsteen''s strongest work but even his weaker songs are still streets ahead of a lot of the dross that other artists produce and which claim to be masterpieces. I defy anyone not to belt out Better Days when they''re listening to the album in their car. The same would go for Lucky Town, Living Proof and My Beautiful Reward and the extraordinary If I Should Fall Behind is just wonderful. If you check out some of the You Tube vids where the ES Band join Bruce in the song, you''ll get chills running up and down your back. So, while it can''t compete with Born in the USA, Born to Run, Darkness etc, this is still a cracking mixture of songs and well worth the investment. Hell, it''s The Boss. No more words necessary.

A Fairly Average Boss
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 11, 2018
Aside from a few gems such as the evergreen ''Better Days'', ''Lucky Town'', ''If I should fall behind'' and ''My Beautiful Reward'' this is a fairly average album from Springsteen. Although it does seem a bit more focused than the decent but overlong ''Human Touch''.
