Description

Darkside is the collaborative duo of critically acclaimed electronic artist Nicolas Jaar and guitarist/composer Dave Harrington. Darkside summon a hybrid of electronic music, psychedelic rock, and dance floor techno with the sort of artistic depth and breadth for which the term "progressive" was coined. Darkside''s first full-length album released on Nico''s own Other People label in conjunction with Matador Records is called Psychic. Darkside''s Psychic is a watershed moment for the duo, a quantum leap forward from their 3-song debut, 2011''s Darkside EP.

I don''t own much techno/trance style music however I thought I''d give this a shot and glad I did. Full of spatial sound textures. Great groove that ebb and flows through out the album. The individual songs flow so tightly they sound more like movements within a song cycle. It''s dark with a hypnotic groove and ethereal vocals that takes you to great places that you want to explore over and over. There is so much sound/music that it begs you to listen critically however it''s just as easy to sit back and drift in and out of the pieces or even use as background music to read or be creative to. Will be listening to this for sometime.

Favorite album of 2013

My favourite album of 2013 is Psychic by Darkside. It''s electro-dream-sound scape rock with enough ProSounds twiddles, blips and hiss to make it psychedelia. It''s also just a good place to escape: electro-trance that, one expects, is played at an after-, after-party in the Balearics or Goa or wherever else rich people go to dance their headaches off.

Like all good albums it''s made up from a patchwork of influences that add up to something bright and new. Bits of Psychic are like Can''s Future Days dissembled by XX or Young Marble Giants. The guitar parts float in from P-Funk''s magnificent Maggot Brain while most of it is re-imagined `90s and `00s rock-tronica (think Underworld, Aphex Twin and Portishead rather than Moby or Norman Cook).

A few of the tracks can only really be described as odd (Greek Light and Sitra) but when the album gets going and back to the beat it really rocks. For me there''s been nothing quite as interesting, musically, this year.

IMHO, Psychic and particularly the key tracks Golden Arrow, Paper Trails and Freak, Go Home are the latest entrants into the pantheon of space-rock. Pink Floyd''s Dark Side of the Moon is the obvious reference here and Psychic builds on that some 40 years later. While the mechanics, the instruments and the voices are different the album art and the fragmentation suggest space, disconnection and disorientation. Like Floyd, Darkside''s sound scapes are either otherworldly and ethereal or homely, comfortable and numb. But, unlike Floyd, Psychic seems to offer closure and, through that, satisfaction and contentment. If all rock music is about release the perfect audience for this album are moon-miners, home exhausted but happy after a hard day scrabbling for meteors.

This is a tasty offering of pure, stereophonic, audiophile-friendly electronic, warm psychedelia. It has been touted as an "alternative" Electronica- based companion piece to Pink Floyd''s Dark Side of the Moon, spellbinding and trippy. The vocalist has a semi-falsetto voice that is evocative of Sting, which doesn''t quite match the drugged-out funk and prog-rock of the instrumental passages. But it grows on you after a few listens. It is music that begs to be paid attention on a decent sounds system, either as capper to a late-night party/gathering, or as a nice way to comedown after a hard day at work with nice beverage in hand.

Best album purchase I''ve made in a while. Buy this if you''re a patient listener with an appreciation for long-form development of layering. Beware, however, that a track from this album - when dropped at the wrong time, like during a house party - could really be a buzz-kill. This is more of an ambient mix of electronic, jazz, rock, and blues mixed with some ethereal vocals that''s best suited for studying/solitude (and probably also for some mind-altering recreational drugs).

use a Milty Antisat, this isn''t static, it''s poor quality control and production. Cleaning with my Moth Mk2 makes no difference to poorly made LPs. With lots of small labels doing ''batches'' I think QC has really went out the window. reckon when vinyl was mass produced the QC was much better. I have a pretty decent deck, some great headphones, (Grado GH2''s) and always look after my LP''s. It''s just a shame that we''re being treated as some sort of ''vinyl revivalists'' where some think pop, crackle and snap is some sort of vinyl charm, it''s not and a decent vinyl pressing can be as quiet as CD and lossless FLACs. This unfortunately is not. I''ll be leaving this review for any new vinyl I buy that is below par. Using Discgogs etc. for second hand is a gamble, but buying new shouldn''t be... Thanks to Amazon for having a great return service or I wouldn''t be having this gamble.
