"If you ever wondered how much better Sherlock would be if people could hurl hellfire at each other, well this one is for you." Starburst Magazine on A Study in Brimstone

As they blunder towards doom, Warlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson find themselves inconvenienced by a variety of eldritch beings. Christmas brings a goose that doesn''t let being cooked slow it down; they meet an electricity demon, discover why being a redhead is even tricker than one might imagine, and Holmes attempts an Irish accent. And, naturally, Moriarty is hanging around... in some form or other.

Review

"Denning blends laughs and chills in his entertaining third warped take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s oeuvre (after 2017’s The Hell-Hound of the Baskervilles), in which Sherlock Holmes is a sorcerer and Watson is his more astute companion. Sherlockians will be especially appreciative of some of the jokes that riff on the canon." - Publishers Weekly

“delightfully quirky and fun” Baker Street Babes

 “hilarious and clever”  Criminal Element

“Warlock Holmes has become my go-to for some light and fluffy fun because I know these characters will never let me down when I want a good laugh. I really hope this trend will continue for the next installment and beyond, because I just can’t wait to read more.”  Bibliosanctum.com

"Riotous from cover to cover, My Grave Ritual takes black fantasy-comedy to new heights (or sundry depths?) and is a "must-read" for connoisseurs of wild fantastic." - Midwest Book Review

“laughter, hilarious situations and mind-boggling cases, wonderful characters you love more than you should, considering they’re fictional and a wonderfully fresh twist on a classic story.” Erlebnisse

“I am looking forward to seeing where he goes next, since it is very clear that he has a lot of exciting, intelligent plot in store for us, if these first three books have been anything to go by.”
The Frumious Consortium

“endearingly funny and entertaining” From Girlie to Nerdy

“The balance of mystery with supernatural is superb and quite a combination.” Geekisphere

This final installment in the Warlock Holmes series continues with the same wonderful dark, bloody humor as the previous books, and left me wanting more - more blood and gore, more demons and monsters, more sorcery and soul-binding, more death and destruction – you know, all those fun things we expect in a story derived from ACD’s Sherlock Holmes stories! Don’t expect clever deductions by Holmes, he’s an idiot, but he’s such a nice guy you can’t help but like him! John Watson does his best to keep Holmes in check, and prevent him from bringing down the entire world into fire and ashes, not an easy job for our dear doctor. Sit back, read, and enjoy the ensuring chaos, and fingers crossed for more installments!

Sadly this book is utterly lacking the vim and enjoyment found in the first two books. The stories were forced, Holmes almost unenthusiastic or enjoyable to read about, and Watson just going through the paces.

Maybe it should have been two stars, but my love for the author''s overall body of work and a 4th Warlock Holmes book to read give me pause...

...for hope.

This series continues to cleverly build upon the stories of the original Holmes, but with fantastical twists. The humor is as sharp as the other two in the series, and the story is growing to foreshadow other subplots, as well as the impending doom of the world. So that''s fun. For the reader, anyway. Not so much for poor Watson.

If you''re a Sherlock Holmes fan and also happen to like sorcerers and humor, read this. It''s perfect for people like us.

I absolutely love this series. I have read or listened to the first two at least a dozen times a piece. This third volume however... it was missing something. The reader can clearly see how the author is developing the plot and expanding his quirky universe beyond the major plot point of Holmes’ battle with Moriarty, but the pace was a bit rushed. There were more adventures covered in this installment than in any of the other, but, again, they were missing the delightful detail the reader has become accustomed to. Despite this, I did enjoy this volume. There were certainly points I laughed out loud at the antics of the protagonists, and I enjoy learning more and more about the character’s back stories, I just wish there was... more depth to this novel. I am looking forward to the final two installments!

Just like the first two in the series, the story is fun. I love the nods to the original stories, and the humor just makes for some fun, light reading.

First, when a story in this series is called "My Grave Ritual", the author means exactly what it says on the tin: it is going to be about my grave. Or rather, the putative grave of Dr Watson, which he hopes one day to be worthy enough to achieve. I admit, I teared up a little when Watson was so full of doubt about how he could possibly deserve a reward for being brave, faithful, loyal and self-sacrificing. I really love Watson, in case you hadn''t worked it out by now; I''ve always liked and appreciated Dr Watson from the canonical ACD stories, but this Watson is marvellous and I love him to bits. Warlock is the same as ever he was, but we get a very enlightening glimpse into his mind and the way he thinks, which helps us realise why he sometime seems to be so shockingly lacking in common sense. When we remember that he''s at least two hundred and fifty years old, is stuffed as full of demons and otherworldly entities voices in his head as a Christmas pudding is full of currants, and has spent the majority of his life around magicians, wizards, and the magical world, then what for him is "normal, unremarkable, doesn''t bear mentioning" suddenly takes on a whole new meaning - of course he''s not going to mention that a portrait has literally burning eyes, for him this is "doesn''t every picture have that?" The fact that we are also teased with the delayed apocalypse (yes, Watson mentions it and drops even more dire hints once more, no it hasn''t happened yet) is not even off-putting, because although I for one am eager to know what is going to happen when it happens, I am enjoying the excursions into new takes on the old tales so much I am in no hurry to get to the End of the World As We Know It. Another wonderful, faithful and funny entry in the series that turns all the ACD stories on their heads while managing to provide reasonable (for a certain value of "reasonable") alternate magical explanations that fit the originals. I am both intrigued and very concerned about the burgeoning romance between Watson and The Woman; I love canonical Irene and feel that many adaptations don''t understand her character and reduce her to a mere adventuress, but I am so protective of this Watson that I do feel like warning this Irene "don''t hurt a hair on his head, never mind break his heart, or else!" I also think in one of the stories there may be a reference to Gaiman''s mash-up of the Lovecraft and Holmes universes which, again, is very clever and very funny. To sum up, an excellent, funny yet faithful to the originals addition to the Warlock Holmes series which is not a mere pastiche but a new creation in its own right and very much recommended!

It''s not often when a sequel is better than the first book in a series, and even less often that the third is better than either of the two before, but with "My Grave Ritual" Denning hits the street running and doesn''t stop until the paper runs out.

Great fun.... Mixing Holmes and Watson with a supernatural fantasy twist with a big serving of humour. It kept me smiling and turning the pages.
